Review Shilling & Florin Book One

Oh my goodness, I absolutely adored Shilling & Florin Book One: The Jack of Hearts Murders! From the very first page, I was completely captivated by Kate Haley's imaginative world-building. This isn't your typical Victorian London; it's a vibrant, alternative version with a fascinating twist on social norms and hierarchies that immediately grabbed my attention. The author cleverly incorporates elements of social progress, particularly in her portrayal of sex workers, creating a setting that felt both familiar and refreshingly unique. The grimy streets and gaslit alleys of this alternate London perfectly set the stage for a thrilling serial killer mystery, one that kept me guessing until the very end.

The real stars of the show, however, are Charles Shilling and Amelia Florin. Shilling, the brilliant but scruffy anarchist, is a truly captivating character. He's quirky, empathetic, and surprisingly charming – a delightful blend of Sherlock Holmes's genius with a touch of Columbo's endearing obliviousness. He's not your typical brooding, emotionally unavailable detective, and his interactions with supporting characters are genuinely endearing. I especially loved the delightful chemistry between him and Amelia.

Amelia Florin is simply phenomenal. A brilliant medical student navigating the complexities of her aristocratic background, she's intelligent, cunning, and fiercely independent. She's the kind of strong female character that I absolutely adore – someone who is both capable and vulnerable, and whose intelligence isn't diminished by her romantic interests. Their partnership is a masterclass in mutual respect and subtle affection; their scenes together are electric with unspoken tension and burgeoning romance, making the slow-burn aspect of their relationship utterly compelling. Seriously, please tell me they end up together! I'm already desperate for the next book!

The mystery itself is cleverly plotted and full of suspense. While I must confess I figured out the killer a bit early, the journey to the solution was far from predictable. Haley masterfully weaves together the intricacies of the investigation with the development of her characters, making the story feel as much about their personal growth and evolving relationship as it does about solving the crime. The pacing is fantastic; the story never drags, and the author keeps you hooked with a constant flow of exciting plot twists and intriguing red herrings.

The Jack of Hearts Murders is more than just a historical mystery; it's a character-driven story with heart, humor, and a dash of social commentary. I laughed out loud at Shilling's antics, and I found myself genuinely invested in both his and Amelia's personal journeys. The atmospheric writing vividly transports you to the cobblestone streets of Victorian London, making it an immersive and unforgettable reading experience. If you’re a fan of well-written historical mysteries, compelling characters, and a touch of romance, then I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It's a fantastic start to a series that I can't wait to continue!
